Welcome to Pembroke Dock Harlequins RFC

Pembroke Dock Harlequins RFC began back in 1880 when around fifteen men working in Pembroke Dock's Dockyard pulled on their rugby shirts and set up the club with the teams matches being played at the Barrack Hill Ground. Since then the club has survived through some very tough periods including two World Wars and the closure of the town's dockyard leaving us with the fine club we have today.

When the club began all those years ago it was called Pembroke Dock Football Club then later Pembroke Dock Rugby Football Club until the early 1900's when the name Pembroke Dock Harlequins was finally established. The Pembroke Dock Quins began playing at the Barrack Hill Ground and many other venues until they made their permanent home the Bierspool Ground in 1956.

Viv Hay MBE

It with great sadness that we announce the sudden death of Mr. T. V. Hay MBE. On Friday 20th August.

Timmy was the club’s first Patron and is likely to be the last. As the position was created just for Viv in recognition of the exceptional servicer he had given to the club.

He played for the club before the 2nd World War, and rejoined when it had ended. By this time his playing days were behind him and he turned his attention to the administration of the club. By the time he was demobbed from the Navy the Quins had been reformed and Arthur Skerry was the club’s secretary so Viv became assistant secretary. It was not long before he was doing most of the secretarial work and after a few seasons he replaced Arthur and remained the club’s secretary for 38 years!

Viv possessed unusual drive and energy, this bull dozing ways often upset members, but he got things done! He was diligent in his secretarial work, but he did much more than that. He never missed a work party, and there  were hundreds of them when we were building the club house. He led negotiations for the purchase of the parcels of the land the club acquired. All the time he was secretary he always travelled away on the 1st team bus, and he very rarely missed a home for over 60 years. Many a time a referee would take offence of a timely comment Viv made about the match, by threatening to remove Viv from the field his reply was you cannot do that as he owned it. To which no one the touchline disagreed with.   As club secretary it was his responsibility to allocate International Rugby Tickets, he was renowned for always having a spare ticket for a deserving club member even on the eve of the match, where or how he was able to conjure these tickets from no one dared asked or cared!

The Club has always had and will continue to have enthusiastic and able men running the club. But in length of service and for sheer volume of work, no one can compare with Viv, as his service was really exceptional.

Viv will be sorely missed by all past and current players and members alike.

Dennis Lloyd

President.
